If you’ve spent time outdoors across the North Carolina Piedmont this summer, you’ve felt the relentless heat and dry soil. While our gardens felt the strain, another quiet victim has been working behind the scenes: the honeybee. When plants experience severe drought and heat stress, survival takes priority, and they throttle back or completely shut down nectar secretion. Across the region, vital wildflowers and trees offered brilliant color to the eye this season, but very little fuel for our colonies.
At Serenity Acres, our hives have faced one of the most challenging seasons in recent memory. Instead of filling the supers with surplus honey, our bees expended an immense amount of energy flying further afield just to sustain the hive and survive the dry spell. Mother Nature kept the ledger tightly balanced, leaving very little room for extraction and resulting in a significantly limited total harvest for 2026.
What little honey our bees have managed to produce under these tough conditions is exceptionally pure, hard-earned, and in very short supply. Quality will always trump quantity here, and we refuse to compromise the purity of our raw honey just to fill shelves. When you do manage to secure a jar of local honey this season, know that it represents a precious, resilient commodity from bees that worked twice as hard for half as much.
With Gratitude - John
Welcome to Serenity Acres
Nestled in the beautiful countryside of Bahama, North Carolina, our 14-acre honey farm is a peaceful retreat where nature and tradition come together. Here, our magnificent Tulip Poplar forest meets open pasture, creating the perfect environment for our honeybees to thrive.
Our Story
Serenity Acres began in 2020 when John Vargas, a North Carolina certified beekeeper, established this special place with a simple vision: to create quality honey while respecting the natural world around us. Built on a foundation of careful stewardship and genuine passion, our farm combines time-honored beekeeping practices with a deep appreciation for nature's unpredictability.
Our Approach
We believe in keeping things simple and authentic. Our honey is produced in small batches, allowing us to maintain the highest quality standards while preserving the distinctive flavors that make North Carolina honey so special. From hive to jar, we handle every step with care, ensuring that what reaches your table is pure, natural goodness. Always in glass never in plastic!
Experience the Difference
We invite you to join us for small group honey tasting seminars held here on the farm. These relaxed gatherings offer a wonderful opportunity to sample different honey varieties and learn about the subtle differences in flavor and character that each season brings. It's a sensory experience that connects you directly to the land and the incredible work of our bees.
Our Mission
At Serenity Acres, we're committed to sustainable beekeeping practices, producing exceptional small-batch honey, and fostering education about these remarkable pollinators. We believe in sharing our knowledge and passion with others, helping to ensure that future generations will understand and protect the vital role that honeybees play in our world.
